Budenovka — a Red Army cloth helmet of a special sample, a uniform headdress of the military personnel of Workers' and Peasants' Red Army.
Creation in February, 1918 of armed forces of the first Soviet state caused the necessity of development for regimentals of Red Army men of a uniform dress code different from a former Russian and foreign military uniform.
For this purpose the National Commissariat on military affairs of RSFSR the order of May 7, 1918 was announced a competition in development of new regimentals for the military personnel of RKKA in which the famous Russian artists V. M. Vasnetsov, B. M. Kustodiyev, M. D. Ezuchevsky, S. T. Arkadyevsky and others took part.
On December 18, 1918 on the basis of the works presented on a competition the Revolutionary Military Council of the Republic approved new type of a winter headdress — a cloth helmet, a form reminding medieval "erikhonka" or a pricker with a barmitsa — part of an armor of epic Russian athletes (what at first received the everyday name "bogatyrka" for).
Subsequently the helmet which became a bright sign of belonging to Red Army called on names of military leaders to which parts under command of the first the new regimentals — to M. V. Frunza ("frunzevka") and S. M. Budenny came ("budenovka").
The last name supported by glory of the First cavalry took roots and became nominal.
