Application:
Apply 1,2 propylene glycol (about 40%) in production of unsaturated polyester resinss (to the construction industry and production of cars), elastic polyurethane, the alkyd pitches - in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry (about 10%) as solvent of natural and synthetic substances at preparation of ointments, pastes, creams, shampoos, etc. - in the food industry (10-12%) as solvent of food additives and humidifier of tobacco (thanks to the hygroscopicity).
1,2 propylene glycol possess the moderate preserving bactericidal properties. It is used also at production of brake fluids, antifreezes and heat carriers, as the plasticizer by production of transparent and vinyl films. Due to the replacement of ethylene glycol ethers with less toxic connections use of ethers increases. Toxicity 1,2 propylene glycols (LD50 = 20000 mg/kg, rats) is lower, than at ethylene glycol (LD50 = 4700 mg/kg).
