Brass is a double or multicomponent alloy on the basis of copper where the basic alloying element is zinc, sometimes with addition of tin, nickel, lead, manganese, iron and other elements.

Physical properties

  • Density — 8300 — 8700 kg/m ³
  • Specific heat at 20 °C — 0,377 kJ · кг−1 · K−1
  • Specific electric resistance — (0,07-0,08)·10−6 Ohms · m
  • Temperature of melting of brass depending on structure reaches 880 — 950 °C. With increase in content of zinc temperature of melting goes down. Brass rather well cooks (however it is impossible to weld brass welding by melting — it is possible, for example, contact welding) and is rolled. Though the brass surface if it is not varnished, blackens on air, but in weight it resists action of the atmosphere better, than copper. Has yellow color and it is perfectly polished.
  • Bismuth and lead have an adverse effect on brass as reduce deformability in a hot state. Nevertheless the alloying lead is applied to receiving loose shaving that facilitates its removal when processing by cutting.

  • Marking order
  • The following marking is accepted. A brass alloy is designated a letter "L" then letters of the basic elements forming an alloy follow. Deformable latuny the first two figures after a letter "L" specify the average content of copper in brands as a percentage. For example, L70 — the brass containing 70% of Cu. In case of alloyed deformed by latuny specify still the letters and figures designating the name and quantity of the alloying element, LAZh60-1-1 means the brass from 60% of Cu alloyed by aluminum (A) in number of 1% and iron in number of 1%. The maintenance of Zn is determined by a difference from 100%. In foundry latunyakh the average content of components of an alloy is as a percentage put right after the letter designating its name. For example, Lts40mts1,5 brass contains 40% of zinc (C) and 1,5% of manganese (Mts).

Brass — an alloy of red copper with zinc. The amount of the entered zinc in different brands of brass fluctuates within 10 — 42%. Brass in relation to red copper is an alloy with the increased temporary resistance and the increased viscosity, and color of red copper turns into yellow color of an alloy. Increase of content of zinc, over the size stated above does an alloy firm, fragile and of little use for the technical purposes. Except zinc lead and tin in small amounts is entered into some brands of brass: the first is entered into muntsevy brass with the purpose to improve metal processing by cutting; the second in sea brass with the purpose to increase corrosion alloy resilience. Brands of ordinary brass of a normirovana.
