Writing feathers are known from an extreme antiquity, approximately from 3000th year BC, and were cut out from reed stalks. The English word "PEN" (the handle, a writing feather) came from Latin "penna" (a feather of a bird) as big distribution was got by goose quills which were ground at a root. From 6th century BC feathers used for more than one thousand years many civilizations. The best samples were made of feathers of swans, turkey-cocks and geese as having feathers of the largest size in wings. Archeological finds in ruins Pompeii include bronze options of feathers, however they gained distribution only by the end of the 18th century. Century later there were pens for which capillary system was thought up by L. E. Uoterman (L.E. Waterman), the New York seller of a stationery. László Biro (Laszlo Biro), leaning on the last methods of production of ball-bearings for machines and the weapon, added to capillaries the ball mechanism and about 1944 presented to the world a ball pen. The Tokyo office firm Pentel became the first, presented to the world a felt-tip pen in 1960. The Russian term comes from the word "hand".
It is invented by the Hungarian journalist László Biro (Laszlo Biro). In the Argentina city where many years there lived the journalist, such handles are called in honor of it "biroma", the eponymous name "Bira" is distributed also in Europe. Originally intended for Royal military and air forces of Great Britain as usual peryevy pens did not function on planes at big height. There are two types of ball pens — disposable and refilled.
